The Fortistrut series of clamps is new to the industry. The use of strut channels on bench tops (below the surface or mounted on top) is possible. For mounting strut channels on top of a workbench, sawhorse, 2×4 or other structures, it is recommended to follow the strut channel manufacturer for load ratings and other safety guidelines. For mounting strut channels below the surface of a workbench, the strut channel should not be more than 1/16″ below the top of the bench top. The drawing shows the 2 Fortistrut clamp models and recommended guidelines for this application. The Fortistrut-Q: The addition of a 1/2″ fender washer should be added below the base of the clamp. The disassembly of the Fortistrut-Q is shown in the left side of the diagram. The user should be aware that the shoulder bolt was assembled using Loctite #263. Removal of the shoulder bolt and cleaning the thread of the old Loctite compound should be done before reassembling the clamp (refer to information on the Loctite website). Assemble the clamp in the order of the parts diagram shown. ONLY USE ONE FENDER WASHER. Using more fender washers will cause the wave spring to over compress, greatly decreasing its life. Should the strut channel rest more than 1/16″ below the bench top, it is recommended using shim material to raise the strut channel within the 1/16″ distance. This can be accomplished using pieces of the packaging that the Fortistrut clamps were shipped in or other “clam shell” packaging. Metal deck framing straps will also work well.
The Fortistrut-L (on the right side of the diagram) can accommodate more than one fender washer as it is a different design than the Fortis-Q. Simply remove the strut nut and place a fender washer between the strut nut and the base of the clamp. The addition of too many fender washers may require replacing the 1/2-13 hex head bolt with a longer one. To replace the hex head bolt, remove the hairpin cotter pin, pull off the clamp push face and then unscrew the clamp rod..
